About UNCW Athletics

The university holds Division I membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Colonial Athletic Association. Teams are fielded for men in basketball, cross country, baseball, golf, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, and outdoor track and field. Teams for women are fielded in basketball, cross country, softball, golf, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, volleyball, and outdoor track and field.


Overview

During the fall and spring semesters and summer sessions, the Department of Athletics has openings for interns with educational experiences or backgrounds in sport management, communications, business, marketing, and other related majors. These internships provide on-the-job learning experiences for undergraduate, graduate, or recently graduated students who express an interest in pursuing a career in the administration of intercollegiate athletics.The Department of Athletics is committed to offering valuable internship experiences in a variety of departmental areas. Our interns over the past few years have served as tremendous resources for the Department of Athletics’ overall success. The internships provide individuals with an invaluable experience that will benefit them in their pursuit of a career in intercollegiate athletics. UNCW seeks individuals who exhibit strong leadership skills, academic excellence and a demonstrated interest in intercollegiate athletics.

Internship Programs
There are three types of internships available within our department:  volunteer, academic, and compensatory.  The number and types of internships available will be based on the needs of the department.

Volunteer--Individuals who have a desire to gain work experience within athletic administration. These interns will receive no monetary compensation for these positions.

Academic--Individuals participate in the academic internship program in order to meet academic requirements of their degree while gaining experience in their chosen field. 

Compensatory--Individuals accepted in this internship program are given a monthly stipend while gaining experience in their chosen field. These individuals may work part-time or full-time and the length of the internship can vary from 6 months to 12 months. The availability of compensatory internships will be determined as funds are available.

Individuals who have participated in the volunteer and academic internships will be considered first for the compensatory internships rewarding those individuals for their commitment to our department.

Available Internships

 

Academic Support - Assist in academic counseling for student-athletes; assist with the coordination and monitoring of the study hall program; assist with various NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills activities; assist with community outreach.

Athletic Communications - Athletics Communications and Creative are looking for interns for the Fall ’24 semester. This is a fast-paced hands-on experience dealing with social media, content creation, basic media training and day-to-day workings within the department and varsity athletic programs. 

On the communications side, interns will be part of recording statistics at events, learning photography basics, writing both features and recaps and producing in game highlights from video streams.  
The creative side will work on projects concerning production of video, graphics, photography, and social media posts for both the varsity programs but also the Seahawk Club, Sports Marketing and Ticketing.

Compliance - Assist with the department’s monitoring of NCAA, CAA, and institutional rules and regulations; review compliance documentation and forms and prepare compliance newsletters and educational literature, assist with the compliance website; utilize compliance assistant software.

Development (Seahawk Club) - The Development Assistant role aids in many areas of the booster club and fundraising organization, including but not limited to: cultivation and fundraising events; hospitality functions in conjunction with athletic contests; annual campaign communications; solicitation, follow-up and thank you mailings; general office duties and customer service responsibilities; other duties as assigned. Facilities and Event Management - Assist in the day to day operations which will range from general upkeep of athletic facilities to major facility projects. Assist with the planning, preparations, and operations of UNCW home athletic contests and other special events held in athletic facilities. Contact: Derek Brown, browndc@uncw.edu

Marketing and Promotions 
- Assist with the marketing, promotion and game-day operations for Seahawk Athletics.Contact: Rob Brickels, brickelsr@uncw.edu 

 


Sports Performance - Offers a chance to gain hands-on experience with Division I student-athletes in the sports performance setting. Interns will assist in the Seahawk Sports Performance Center in implementing team-specific programs while learning to demonstrate and apply safe and effective exercise techniques for strength and power development, injury prevention, and core stability. Assist with speed development and conditioning sessions; assist with cleaning and maintaining the Seahawk Sports Performance Center. Contact: Elijah Cufeee, cufeee@uncw.edu


Ticket Operations - Assist in the ticket office operations including but not limited to: providing outstanding customer service on phone and in person during daily ticket office staffing; assisting in the sale of individual and season tickets; following up on sales leads; make cold calls to generate season, group and individual sales; staffing ticket office at home athletic events; other duties as assigned. Permanent Employment

The internship program is designed to facilitate a hands-on learning and work experience. It provides an opportunity for individuals to develop skills necessary to enter the job market. UNCW is under no obligation to offer full time employment to participating individuals after the completion of the internship. Likewise, individuals are under no obligation to UNCW after completion of the work period.
