UNCW Completes Sweep With 15-3 Win Over Towson

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Zane Taylor tossed seven shutout innings and Alec DeMartino added three hits as UNCW swung its way past visiting Towson, 15-3, on Sunday to complete a Coastal Athletic Association series sweep at Brooks Field.

UNCW, which scored a season-high in runs and tied a season-best with 17 hits, improved to 23-13 overall and 10-2 in the CAA. The Seahawks gained sole possession of first place following Northeastern's 14-11 loss at Delaware on Sunday.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth, Towson loaded the bases against Taylor but failed to push anything across. Brock Wills caught a fly ball out for the first out of the inning and threw out the base runner from third trying to score. Taylor closed out the inning with a fly ball to center.

The Seahawks used that momentum to score twice in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 4-0 lead. DeMartino doubled to lead off the Seahawk half and scored one batter later on an RBI single by Trevor Marsh. Marsh would score later in the inning on a fielder's choice by Wills.

Including DeMartino, six Seahawks finished with multi-hit games, including Wills, who knocked in three runs, and Tanner Thach, who belted his 19th homer of the season to give UNCW a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Thach homered in each game over the weekend.

Taylor (4-0) scattered four hits over a season-long seven innings, walked one and struck out four. He lowered his earned run average to 3.53.

Elija Dickerson, Taye Robinson and Steven Vrolijk had two hits apiece for Towson. Dickerson ruined the shutout bid with a two-run double in the eighth inning.

Max Simpson (2-4) took the loss after allowing two runs, both on Tanner's homer in the first inning, in four innings of work.

The Seahawks take on nationally-ranked Wake Forest at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The game will be played at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
