WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW used a pair of big innings at the plate and a solid pitching performance to collect its second straight win, a 7-1 non-conference victory over DePaul to close out Friday's action at the UNCW Tournament at Boseman Field.
The Seahawks improved to 2-0 on the young season while DePaul dropped to 0-2 with consecutive setbacks against Furman and UNCW to begin its campaign.
Graduate student outfielder Skylar Stockton anchored the Seahawks' offense by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, while freshman Allison Corbin drove in two runs with a single in the third inning.
Junior pitcher Emily Winstead had an impressive season debut, scattering just two hits over five innings with four strikeouts. Senior Carrigan Ewers threw the final two frames to complete the Seahawks' effort in the circle.
Five different players registered a hit for DePaul in the defeat. Sophomore Bella Nigey was credited with the loss in the circle after conceding three runs on five hits over four innings.
How It Happened: UNCW plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 3-0 lead. After Amodeo broke the stalemate with a sacrifice fly, Corbin upped the advantage with a two-run single to center field. The Seahawks tacked on four more runs in the fifth before DePaul ended the shutout bid with a run in the seventh inning.
Inside the Box Score: UNCW was 5-for-13 with runners on base in the victory, including a 3-for-8 success rate with runners in scoring position … Each team registered a double play in the contest … Winstead and Ewers combined to retire the Blue Demons' leadoff hitter in all seven innings.
