Jones, Seahawks Advance to CAA Semifinals

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – UNCW goalkeeper Bennett Jones made three penalty kick saves to advance the sixth-seeded Seahawks to the Coastal Athletic Association Men's Soccer Semifinals with a 5-4 advantage on penalty kicks in Thursday afternoon's CAA First Round matchup vs. third-seeded Monmouth at Vidas Field.

The Seahawks (5-8-5) and Hawks (8-2-6) played to a 1-1 draw in double-overtime to send the opening match of the CAA Tournament to penalty kicks where Jones entered in net in relief of UNCW starter Trey Smiley, who recorded two saves in a strong 110-minute effort.

UNCW's Ethan Newsome and Jake Shannon converted penalty kick goals to make it 2-2 entering Monmouth's third attempt. Jones saved an attempt by the Hawks' Bastian Hatcher to even the score ahead of round four.

The teams traded makes-and-misses until the seventh round when Caleb Powell sent a ball through the lower right of the net to put the Seahawks ahead, 5-4, with a chance for Jones to play hero with a save.

Monmouth's Brendan Tansey lasered a shot to the right of the net that Jones outstretched and deflected to send the Seahawks into a bench into a midfield frenzy as well as Sunday's CAA Semifinals matchup vs. host and second-seeded Drexel at 3 p.m.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead shortly into the second half and it remained the score until just under 10 minutes to go when freshman Christian Acevedo found the back of the net on a play into the box by Powell that was headed right in front of the net by Shannon to set up Acevedo's equalizer.
