Diamond Hawks Clinch Second Seed

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Brooks Baldwin collected three hits and Zane Taylor delivered five innings of one-run baseball as UNCW clinched the second seed in next week's Colonial Athletic Association tournament with a 9-2 win over James Madison on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Seahawks, who won five of their last six conference games, enter the conference tournament with a record of 31-22 overall and 15-9 in the league. The Dukes, meanwhile, conclude their season with a mark of 27-26 and 12-11.

Baldwin had three singles and knocked in two runs. At the opposite end of the order, Noah Bridges had two hits and scored twice. He belted his third homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Also homering was Dillon Lifrieri, it was his eighth of the season.

Taylor (4-1) earned the win going five innings. He allowed six hits, walked none and struck out five.

The UNCW pitching staff issued just one free pass on the afternoon.

Kyle Novak had three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Trevon Dabney added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Justin Showalter (4-8) was tagged with the loss, going 5.1 innings.

How it happened: The Seahawks jumped on the board in the top of the first as Baldwin singled to lead things off and advanced to third on a single by Taber Mongero. Ethan Baucom, who tied a school record being hit by pitches three times, plated Baldwin with a sac fly. UNCW added two in the second for a 3-0 lead. Baldwin had a two-out RBI single and Baucom was hit with the bases loaded to force in the second run of the inning and third of the game.

Home Runs: UNCW – Noah Bridges (3, leading off the fourth inning, to center field), Dillon Lifrieri (8, one on and two out in the seventh to left field)

Up next: The Seahawks will be the two-seed at the CAA championship tournament and will take the field on May 26 at 7 p.m.
