Pirates Edge Diamond Hawks, 3-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – East Carolina took advantage of a pair of UNCW errors to score two runs in the eighth inning for a 3-1 win at Brooks Field on Tuesday.

The Pirates (11-10) halted a modest two-game skid with the road win while the Seahawks (12-8) closed out their homestand with the loss.

Pitching dominated the game as the teams combined for just nine hits.

ECU's Garrett Saylor (2-2) earned the win out of the bullpen, retiring all nine batters he faced.

Ethan Chenault (1-1), meanwhile, suffered the loss after allowing both runs, unearned, in the eighth inning. Freshman Zane Taylor gave UNCW 5.2 innings of three-hit, one-run baseball in his second career start. He struck out three and did not issue a walk.

UNCW's Brooks Baldwin held game-high honors with two hits.

Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had an RBI single for the Pirates in the sixth inning.

How it happened: Ben Newton opened the eighth inning for ECU with a single through the right side and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt one batter later. Lane Hoover bounced a ball to second, but the throw to first came up short and allowed pinch runner Jake Kuchmaner to score the go-ahead run. Hoover would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly.

Inside the box score: The pitching staffs combined to allow just two two-out hits (one for each team) … UNCW was 1-for-5 with RISP while ECU was 0-for-3 … Both times ECU landed its leadoff runner on base, that runner scored … Tonight's attendance was a season-high 2,046.

Home Runs: none

Up next: The Seahawks open Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday with a 6 p.m. start at William & Mary.
