UNCW Adds Seven To Beach Volleyball Program


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Amy Bambenek, UNCW's head indoor and beach volleyball coach has announced the additions of seven student-athletes to play on the beach team in 2016-17.

"This class represents just how much the sport of beach volleyball is growing across the country and in North Carolina," said Bambenek. "We are very excited about the years of valuable beach experience our freshmen are bringing in. Hayley (Caputo) is coming from one of the top beach high school programs in California and our home state freshman have been competing regularly across the Carolina region. Our two fifth-year grad students, Tanna (Aljoe) and Emily (Corrigan), have had very successful collegiate indoor careers and both have had training in the sand during their high school years.  Caroline (Georke) was a redshirt transfer last season and we look forward to her getting the chance to finally compete. Overall this class is going to add a lot of sharp skills and experience to the foundation we built in our first season"

Tanna Aljoe (Grapevine, Texas) played in 86 sets over the course of 27 indoor matches for N.C. State … Collected a season-high 10 digs against Pitt and posted 129 digs on the season ... Also handed out 26 assists and served up eight aces.

Audrey Bunn (Kill Devil Hills, N.C.) played 121 sets for First Flight High School … Finished with 269 kills and a .378 hitting average … Totaled 114 blocks, including 87 solo … Two-time All-Conference selection.

Hayley Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) Helped Mira Costa to three IBVL (Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League) championships … Played two years with Mizuno Beach Volleyball Club in Long Beach, Calif.

Emily Corrigan (Johns Creek, Ga.) started all 30 matches for the indoor program at Appalachian State … Second on team with 411 kills (3.7/set) … Averaged 2.68 digs per set (297 total) … Two-time first-team All-Sun Belt selection … Also earned first-team All-SoCon honors as a sophomore.

Caroline Goerke (Marietta, Ga.) transfer into the program from South Carolina … Did not play at USC … Three-time letterwinner on the indoor team at Walton High School … Played on the 2013 USA Beach Junior Olympic team at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. … Won Triple Crown Beach Championship in 2013 … Also two-time Sunshine State Outdoor Volleyball Association champion.

Kristy Mundy (Huntersville, N.C.) two-time captain at Hough High School … Earned First-Team All-Conference honors her senior season … Helped Hough to combined record of 45-9 her junior and senior seasons during indoor seasons … Posted four first-place and a pair of second-place showings in the Carolina Region beach tournaments.

Raquel Rooney (Raleigh, N.C.) posted 249 kills and a .495 hitting average her senior season of indoor volleyball … Named team most valuable player and captain … Played on Carolina Region best beach team her last two seasons … Attended nationals twice.
