Ritchie Candidate For NCAA Woman-of-the-Year

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Former UNCW women's tennis star Alyssa Ritchie is one of only two nominees from the Colonial Athletic Association for the prestigious NCAA Woman-of-the-Year Award.

Ritchie and Hofstra volleyball standout Kelsie Wills join several other outstanding female student-athletes vying for the honor, which is based on academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Overall, there are 480 nominees, including 207 in NCAA Division I, 93 in Division II and 180 in Division III, according to the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics (CWA), which manages the nomination process and selections.

"It's a tremendous honor to be just nominated for this award, but to be one of just two individuals from the CAA is an even greater testimony to Alyssa's accomplishments," said Jimmy Bass, UNCW's sixth-year athletic director. "It's truly special for her to be recognized in this way and a fitting way to cap her collegiate career."

The NCAA Woman-of-the-Year selection committee chooses the top-10 honorees in each of the three NCAA divisions. From those 30 candidates, the committee then determines the top three finalists in each division. Members of the CWA then select the 2015 NCAA Woman-of-the-Year from the top nine finalists.

The unique recognition is the latest in a series of honors for Ritchie, a Franklin, Ohio, product who concluded her four-year career on the courts in April. She was awarded her Bachelor's Degree in Biology during UNCW's Spring Commencement.

Ritchie was earlier named recipient of the UNCW's Chancellor's Cup Award, the top academic award for female student-athletes in the athletic department, after posting a 3.976 grade point average.

Ritchie was subsequently selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women's At-Large Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The talented Ritchie added another honor to her impressive collection last month when the CAA tabbed her as the league's Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year for 2014-15.
