Seahawks Bounce Bulldogs With Big Second Half

UNCW-Barton Box Score | Game Highlights

WILMINGTON, North Carolina –
Newcomers Trey Grundy, Chris Flemmings and C.J. Bryce combined for 35 points as the UNCW men's basketball team reeled off its 28th consecutive men's basketball exhibition victory with an 81-51 throttling of NCAA Division II Barton on Sunday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks, who have not lost an exhibition game since 1998, broke away from the pesky Bulldogs late in the first half and cruised down the stretch, leading by as many as 33 points in the convincing win. And, ironically, it was a former BC product that did most of the damage.

Flemmings, a junior guard who transferred last year to the coast, scored 10 of 12 points in the first half and wound up connecting on 5-of-9 shots from the floor with eight rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes. Grundy, a freshman forward, led the Seahawks with 13 points and Bryce, a freshman guard, contributed 10 to give the Seahawks three players in double figures.

Senior guard Jake Veasley of Barton led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting. UNCW limited the Bulldogs to just 24.2 percent from the floor on 15-of-62 field goals, including only 5-of-23 behind the arc.

"We got everything we wanted out of an exhibition game," said Kevin Keatts, UNCW's second-year coach. "We finished the second half very strong and the guys responded in the second half. Barton is a very explosive team because they have players who can score from four different positions."

The Seahawks pushed out to a 36-28 advantage at halftime and caught fire early in the second stanza to blow past the Wilson, N.C., club. With center Chuck Ogbodo exerting his presence inside and graduate forward Dylan Sherwood heating up outside, UNCW scored the first 18 points of the second half to gain separation from the Bulldogs.

The outburst was part of a 22-3 run that increased UNCW's cushion to 58-31 with 12:18 remaining in the game. The home team's largest lead of the contest came with 4:16 left when Grundy drained a triple in front of the Seahawk bench.

In the first half, the Seahawks grabbed an early 13-6 lead when Flemmings dropped in the front end of a bonus situation at 10:56. But Barton answered with a 13-0 spurt and registered its largest lead of the game, 19-13, on Veasley's trey on the right wing with 7:47 showing.

UNCW closed out the first half with a flurry, scoring 16 of the last 21 points in the period to build a 36-28 margin at the break. The Seahawks wound up shooting 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes, but 15 turnovers allowed the Bulldogs to hang around.

UNCW officially opens the new season on Friday when NAIA member Milligan College pays its first visit to Wilmington for a 7 p.m. start.
