WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks battled the hometown Wilmington Hammerheads to a 1-all draw at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The draw was the second for the Seahawks in as many outings against professional sides. UNCW tied the Carolina RailHawks, 3-3, in their spring season opener in Cary, N.C.

"I thought we played some excellent soccer in the first half and showed a lot of composure, said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “Our passing and ideas were very good, and we were rewarded with Nathaniel's goal to be ahead at the break.”

UNCW wasted little time putting the Hammerheads under pressure as Jack Ward, who notched a goal in the spring opener, sent a shot just wide of the goal in the opening 30 seconds.

The Seahawks were able to breakthrough in the seventh minute on a cross from Ward that was headed home by Nathaniel Goodwin.

Later in the half, Colin Bonner sent a header off the crossbar that would have extended the UNCW in the first half.

Wilmington was able to draw level just after halftime on a counterattack that was headed home in the 47th minute.

The Hammerheads continued to press forward and nearly grabbed the lead, but UNCW goal keeper Sam Williams made a point-blank save to keep the game tied.

UNCW had several opportunities of its own in the second half as Bonner and Goodwin had narrow misses.

“Defensively we had to endure pressure in the second half. The reason you play these games against pro teams like Carolina RailHawks and the Hammerheads is to stretch your players and test them. I thought we defended resolutely and showed a lot of character to not concede a second goal while still trying to win the game ourselves. Overall, it another encouraging performance from our team."

UNCW next hosts North Carolina in a “Harry’s Game” benefit for Down Syndrome Awareness with all proceeds going to the local chapter of TOPS Soccer. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. Tickets for the game are $5 with students and children (under the age of 15) admitted free. There will be a Bouncy Castle and Slide and free pizza and drinks for kids. Call the UNCW men’s soccer office (910) 962-7057 for more information.
