WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW head men's tennis coach Mait DuBois has announced the signing of New Delhi, India, standout Karan Salwan (pronounced Kuh-ran Sol-win) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2013-14 season.
Salwan has been the No. 1 ranked player in India in the 12, 14 and 16-year-old age groups and rated as high as No. 230 in the World ITF Junior Rankings. Just one week following his 17th birthday, Salwan finished as runner-up in the Indian Nationals, defeating the defending champion in the semifinals.
"Karan is an extremely motivated student-athlete who is passionate about reaching his potential as a player with aspirations to play at the professional level," said DuBois. "Everyone speaks highly of his character and work ethic, including one of our former players, Kinshuk Sharma.
"Karan was able to accomplish a world junior ranking of No. 230 at the age of 16 and that's impressive. He has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time and this says a lot about his future potential. He has also enjoyed a lot of success in his home country, where he has been ranked No. 1 in every age group. He has enjoyed success everywhere he has played and I look forward to him bringing his talents to our program. "
The Seahawks have advanced to the NCAA Tournament three of the last four years. UNCW captured Colonial Athletic Association titles in 2009 and 2011 and earned an at-large berth in 2012.
