WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW head baseball coach Mark Scalf has announced the signings of Whitman Barnes, Justin Carroll, Cory Gantz, Casey Golden, Clay Lockamon and Robbie Thorburn to play for the Seahawks in 2013-14.

“We’re extremely pleased with the athleticism and character of these young men,” Said Scalf. “Coach Hood and Coach Woodard have identified a group of high competitive student-athletes with outstanding work ethic. Like most freshmen, there will be a learning curve but we expect all of them to compete for time when they arrive.”

Whitman Barnes (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) posted a 5-4 record with a 1.94 earned run average and 79 strikeouts for coach Gary Smith and his Bears, who were ranked second in the state. The Bears reached the third round of the 4A State tournament, finishing with a 21-6 record. Barnes earned All-Mid-Eastern Conference honors and was also named to the Wilmington Star News All-Area second team as a junior. Last summer Barnes pitched for the Region 2 at the North Carolina State games and later pitched for the Dirtbags at the Perfect Game Jupiter Tournament. At that tournament, Barnes earned All-tournament honors after striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings of shutout baseball.

The staff on Barnes: Whitman is a powerful lefthander with a solid make up. He is a plus-competitor with great baseball awareness. Whitman comes from a great family.

As a junior at West Johnston, Justin Carroll (Raleigh, N.C./West Johnston) helped the Wildcats to the Greater Neuse River Conference in 2012. Carroll hit .344 with 10 doubles, a pair of home runs and knocked in 19 runs. That effort earned him All-GNR honors for the second time after also earning those honors in 2010. Carroll also competed at the prestigious North Carolina State Games with Region 3 during the summers of 2011 and 2012. Carroll also played football for the Wildcats as a quarterback. Carroll played alongside fellow signee Clay Lockamon with the Carolina Cubs at the World Wood Bat Championships in East Cobb, Ga.

The staff on Carroll: Justin is an outstanding three-sport athlete (football and basketball). He’ll remind Seahawk fans of former Seahawk standout and current San Francisco minor leaguer Andrew Cain.

Cory Gantz (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led Hempfield to the Pennsylvania 4A State tournament in 2012 as the Black Knight posted a 14-5 record before bowing out. Gantz, who earned All-Lancaster Lebanon League and All-Sectional honors, owns an 8-3 mark in three seasons while posting a 2.91 ERA in 53 innings. Opponents have hit just .219 against the righthander. He played with the Evoshield Canes at the 2011 Perfect Game World Wood Bat Championships and with the Victus Orioles in 2012.

The staff on Gantz: Cory is a strike thrower who competes very well. He features a mid-80’s fast ball with a plus-slider and change-up.

Casey Golden (Siler City, N.C./Jordan-Matthews) is a three-time All-Mid-State Conference and All-County honoree. As a junior, he batted .453 with 36 runs batted in a 15 stolen bases. Golden has helped the Jordan-Matthews Jets to a pair of 2A state tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012. He played for Region 5 in the North Carolina State Games in 2012.

The staff on Golden: Casey is another dual athlete with a chance to help on the mound and in the field. He has an upper 80’s fastball with plus slider.

Clay Lockamon (Roanoke Rapids, N.C./Roanoke Rapids) joins the Seahawks after playing in the same program that produced former Seahawk and current Los Angles Angels farmhand Tyler DeLoach. Lockamon, like DeLoach, is a strong lefthander who fanned 91 batters in 48 innings for the Yellow Jackets. In 2012, he was a 2A All-State honoree for the second consecutive year as well as the Northern Carolina Conference Player-of-the-Year for a second straight season. A two-way threat for the Yellow Jackets, Lockamon hit .424 with 15 extra base hits, including six round trippers. In two seasons of varsity action, he stands at 12-3 on the mound with 151 strikeouts. Lockamon played for the Carolina Cubs at the World Wood Bat Championships in 2011 and 2012. At the North Carolina State Games last summer, he hit and even .500 playing for Region 3. Lockamon was a two-way force for the Yellow Jackets on the football field too, starting at defensive back and wide receiver.

The staff on Lockamon: Clay is a definite dual player with the chance of helping us on the mound and in the field. He’s a two-sport athlete that should develop into a quality Division I player when his attention turns to just baseball.

Robbie Thorburn (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) is among the top hitters in the state of North Carolina. Thorburn hit .430 with 40 runs scored, 12 doubles, three triples and three homers for the Crusaders of Cardinal Gibbons. He earned All-Carolina Six Conference honors in 2011 and 2012 while helping the Crusaders to state tournament appearances in 2010-12. In 2012, the program won the conference championship. In three seasons of varsity baseball under coach Jim Liebler, Thorburn has totaled 92 runs scored, 25 doubles and stolen 37 bases. Last season, as a junior, Thorburn tied the state record with 14 consecutive hits. Thorburn played with Team North Carolina in the South Atlantic Border Battle in 2011 and 2012 while also playing for Region 3 in the 2012 North Carolina State Games. Thorburn was named All-tournament for the Evoshield Canes at the Perfect Game Jupiter Upperclass Showcase in Jupiter.

The staff on Thorburn: Robbie is extremely athletic and is an advanced hitter. Defensively, he’s strong in the outfield and very capable of playing either of the middle infield positions. Robbie has great instincts and competes hard every day.
