WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW men's soccer team erupted for
two goals in a 3:08 span late in the game, including the go-ahead strike by
sophomore midfielder Jamie Dell with 6:17 remaining, to stun Duke, 2-1, in a
non-conference match Tuesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks, who improved to 3-5-1 overall, trailed 1-0
after a goal early in the second half by the Blue Devils before staging a
dramatic rally down the stretch. It was
UNCW's first win over Duke since the 2006 season and left the Blue Devils with
a 3-4-1 mark.
After Duke centerback Sebastien Ibeagha headed in a cross
from freshman midfielder Ryan Thompson off a corner kick at 55:24, the Seahawks
responded with the surprising spurt down the stretch to send the Duke side back
to Durham with a loss.
The Seahawks scored the equalizer when the Blue Devils were
called for a hand ball in the box and sophomore midfielder Mateo Cardona
finished off the penalty kick with a screaming shot into the upper left corner
at 80:35. It was Caradona's third goal of the year.
Dell, from Chapel Hill, N.C., then delivered the game-winner
at 83:43 when he took a through ball from Nathaniel Goodwin and beat Duke
goalkeeper James Belshaw for the 2-1 lead and his third goal of the campaign.
Coach Aidan Heaney's club looks to build off the big win Saturday
when Hofstra visits Wilmington for a 7 p.m. Colonial Athletic Association test.
