- Bolstered by goals from Taylor Morgan and Timmy Mulgrew, George Mason topped
UNCW, 2-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association season opener for both sides on
Saturday at George Mason Stadium.
The Patriots, who suffered their only loss of the season
earlier in the week, improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. UNCW,
meanwhile, dropped to 2-5-1 and 0-1-0 with its third consecutive loss. The loss
also snapped the Seahawks' three-game winning streak against GMU.
"I thought we played well in the first half, just unfortunate with some of our shots," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "We had some opportunities, but had to chase the game after giving up the early goal. The CAA is a strong conference and earning points on the road is difficult. George Mason played well and defended well all night."
Morgan opened the scoring just 5:31 into the contest when he
converted his own rebound into his sixth goal of the season. UNCW goal keeper
Brandon Bolen made the initial save, but Morgan was able to knock home the carom.
Mulgrew pushed the GMU lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 54th
minute. Ghiles Harmouche started the play on the right side with a feed to
Mulgrew, who sent a shot over Sam Williams, who replaced Bolen in the first
half following an injury. For Mulgrew, it was his fifth goal of the season.
Williams finished with four saves in his collegiate debut. "Sam played with some maturity tonight, it was good to see him active and play well."
Dustin Butcher needed to make just three saves in recording
GMU outshot the Seahawks, 12-7, but UNCW held an 8-7
advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Jamie Dell led UNCW with three shots, two on goal.
The Seahawks close out their non-conference schedule on
Sept. 25, when they host Duke at 7 p.m.
