Last Week's results:
6th of 14 teams (All Division I) at Tar Heel Intercollegiate [Results]
Next tournament:
Oct. 1-2, Rees Jones Intercollegiate (Daufuskie Island, S.C.)
Player of the Week
Nominee: Payne McLeod, Junior (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville)
- McLeod opened his junior season with a 12th-place finish
at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C. He carded a 73-72-72=217
and moved up seven spots in the standings on Sunday. With his 72.3 average in
the opening tournament, he is now just .04 strokes behind UNCW all-time stroke
leader Josh Brock (72.99). His
12th-place finish was also his 16th top-20 finish of his career.
The field included five teams (Duke, NC State, East
Carolina, Notre Dame and Charlotte), that played in the 2012 NCAA tournament,
including East Carolina, who reached stroke play at the NCAA finals. The
Seahawks edged their long time regional rival by two strokes.
Notes: McLeod's
continued his steady play with three more rounds between 70-75. In two-plus
seasons, he has just nine rounds of 76+ while posting 59 rounds of 70-75
(86.8%) ... The Seahawks topped rival ECU thanks to some tremendous play on the
final three holes on Sunday as McLeod and Ryan Nagy posted two birdies apiece
and newcomer Jen Geweke added a birdie ... Geweke made his collegiate debut with
an opening round 74, but carded 81-76 in the final two rounds.
Next Tournament:
The Seahawks head to the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, hosted by South Carolina. UNCW
joins Charleston Southern, Charlotte, East Carolina, Francis Marion,
Iowa State, defending tournament champion Kennesaw State, Liberty,
Presbyterian, South Carolina, Tennessee Tech and Winthrop in the tournament
field. The Seahawks finished tied for ninth with Michigan State at last year's
edition of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate.
