WILMINGTON, North Carolina - East Carolina swept the men 's and women's titles the 23rd Seahawk Invitational Cross Country race late Friday on the recreational fields at UNCW.
Individually, ECU's Antonio Palmer edged Guilford's Andris Goncarovs to win the men's race with a 15:42 time over the flat 5K course. On the women's side, ECU's Stacey Gonzalez was the first of three Pirates to cross the finish line, clocking an 18:17.
The men's opener was delayed one hour due to lightning in the area and the runners took the course following a brief warm-up period. ECU beat out six other teams with 28 points, followed by UNCW (50), Guilford (75), N.C. State Club (105), Pfeiffer (132), Shaw (163) and Fayetteville State (187). It marked just the second time the Pirate men had won the race after taking the 2000 title.
The ECU women also dominated, taking the first five positions for 15 points during a rainy race. UNCW came in second with 45 points ahead of Meredith (107), N.C. State Club (127), Pfeiffer (132), Guilford (149), Methodist (220), Shaw (232) and Fayetteville State (238). It was the fourth Seahawk Invite title for the ECU women and the first since 2000.
Dylan Skinner was UNCW's top men's finisher after the transfer placed sixth overall with a 16:04 time. Rachel Quinn came in seventh at 18:54 to be the top UNCW women's runner in the race.
