RALEIGH, North Carolina - Drew Farber knocked in five runs on four hits and Travis Bradley pitched into the seventh inning as UNCW fought off elimination with a 13-4 win over Sacred Heart at the NCAA Raleigh Regional at Doak Field on Saturday.
The Seahawks (39-22) advanced and will play the loser of the NC State/Vanderbilt game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Pioneers saw the season end with a record of 25-32.
Farber tied a UNCW NCAA tournament record with his five RBI, matching Matt Wright's effort against LSU in 2003. Farber had four hits on the afternoon as UNCW piled up 17 hits on the afternoon. Every starter had a hit for UNCW while Andrew Cain had three, including his 200th career hit with a bunt single in the first.
The story of the afternoon though, was Bradley's effort on the mound. The senior righthander allowed four runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. It was his longest outing of the season and the second longest of his career. Bradley, who made his fifth start of the season, finished with a walk and a strikeout.
The Seahawks rode the long ball, setting a school NCAA tournament record with five round trippers on the game. Joining Cain and Farber with homers were Tyler Molinaro, Thomas Pope and Corey Dick.
Pope opened the scoring with his sixth homer of the season leading off the second against losing pitcher Nick Leiningen (6-6). A two-out single by Michael Bass later in the inning made it 2-0.
SHU answered in the top of the third when John Murphy lined a two-run, two-out single to tie it at 2-all.
In the bottom of the frame, Molinaro and Cain fueled a four-run inning with back-to-back homers. Molinaro's was a two-run shot to right.
UNCW added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 10-2 lead.
Rocco Gondek, who led the lineup with two hits, belted a two-run homer off Bradley in the seventh to narrow SHU's deficit to 10-4. It was his first homer of the season.
Farber rounded out the scoring with a three-run blast to center that made it 13-4 in the eighth. It was also Farber's first round tripper of the season.
