WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Tommy Vitaletti's double in the ninth plated the go-ahead run
for George Mason as the Patriots rallied with three runs in the inning to upend
UNCW, 10-9, in the final regular season game for both teams on Saturday at
Brooks Field.
The Patriots, who will be the four-seed in the upcoming Colonial
Athletic Association tournament, averted a sweep with the win and improved to
33-22 overall and 16-14 in the CAA. The Seahawks, meanwhile, finished the
season with a 35-20 mark and 24-6 in the league.
The GMU ninth inning opened with consecutive walks and Zack
Helgeson loaded the bases with a single to left off reliever William Prince.
After a foul out behind first base for the first out of the inning, Jake
Leonardo singled deep into the shortstop hole to score a run and a second run
came across to tie it on a throwing error on the play. Prince retired the next
batter, but Vitaletti doubled down the leftfield line to score the winning run.
Prince (2-3) took the loss after surrendering a run,
unearned, on three hits in the ninth.
GMU reliever Chris O'Grady (2-0) picked up the win by
striking out three and allowing just a hit and a walk in 2 2/3 innings.
The Seahawks had rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the sixth
inning with six runs on six hits, including a three-run homer by Matt Campbell
and a two-run round tripper by Andrew Cain that drew UNCW even at seven-all.
Thomas Pope, who finished with a pair of doubles, doubled in the go-ahead run
in the 6th.
UNCW added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Molinaro.
Campbell finished with three runs batted in and drew four
walks. Jake Koenig and Michael Bass had two hits apiece for UNCW.
Leonardo's four hits led a 17-hit attack by the Patriots.
The Seahawks will retake the field in the conference
tournament on May 24 at noon against the winner of the George Mason - VCU game
on the 23rd.
