WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Junior Carrie Williams went 3-for-7 with five RBI to lead Georgia State to a doubleheader sweep of UNCW, 8-0 and 6-0, in Colonial Athletic Association softball action Friday at Boseman Field.
The Panthers moved to 27-11 overall and 5-3 in league play as they extended their winning streak to seven games with the twinbill sweep. The Seahawks slipped to 6-31 and 1-7. The two teams will conclude their three-game league series Saturday with a single game starting at Noon.
Williams belted two home runs during the doubleheader to power a Panthers lineup that finished with 19 hits on the day. Sophomore Jessica Clifton and Freshman Lauren Coleman were both 3-for-8 with two RBI while junior Paige Nowacki and freshman Callie Alford chipped in two hits each.
Game one saw Georgia State take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a solo home run from Clifton before adding three runs in the fourth on a lead off blast from freshman Ashley Christy and a double by Coleman to build a 4-0 advantage.
A Coleman double and a Nowacki single in the sixth brought home two more runs and increased the Panthers cushion to 6-0. Williams closed out the scoring with a two-run home run to left field in the top of the seventh.
Junior Alana Thomas picked up the victory for Georgia State in the opener to improve to 10-4 on the season. She scattered four hits and three walks in seven innings of work to record her fifth shutout of the season.
Game two saw Williams get the Panthers on the board in the top of the second as she connected on her second home run of the afternoon, a three-run shot to left center, that gave GSU a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers doubled their advantage to 6-0 in the top of the fourth, plating three runs on an UNCW error and run-scoring singles from Clifton and junior Brenna Morrissey.
That would be all the support that junior McCall Langford would need, limiting the Seahawks to just four hits in seven innings for her third shutout of the season. She struck out six and did not issue a walk.
