WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - The UNCW women's basketball team will take part in the Women's
Basketball Coaches Association's 2012 "Play 4Kay" program, designed to raise
awareness for breast cancer research, when Colonial Athletic Association rival Old
Dominion visits Trask Coliseum Feb. 12 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
"We're very excited to participate in the WBCA's 'Play 4Kay'
program," said UNCW Head Coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. "Breast cancer awareness is
a cause that is very important to me and the entire Seahawk women's basketball program.
We look forward to helping raise awareness for this worthwhile cause."
The Seahawks will debut their new set of pink uniforms for
the contest, which will serve as the program's Molly Maid Pink Game, along with
their traditional pink shooting shirts, socks and shoe laces. The jerseys and
other pink items were made possible through generous donations from various UNCW
women's basketball alumnae and Molly Maid.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game and the UNCW athletic
ticket office is offering a $3 ticket to fans wearing pink. Fans attending the
game without pink apparel will be able to purchase pink UNCW t-shirts for $5
each, with proceeds supporting the American Cancer Society.
Prior to the national anthem, the team will sponsor a
"Survivor Walk." All cancer survivors are encouraged to meet on the Trask
Coliseum court and be recognized for their courageous fight against the
disease.
During the contest with the Lady Monarchs, a silent auction is
scheduled for signed copies of UNCW Head Coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke's
autobiography, "She Got Game: My Personal Odyssey," which chronicles her
mother's battle with breast cancer. The winners of the silent auction will be
announced at the conclusion of the game and will have a chance to take a photo
with Cooper-Dyke at mid-court.
Named in
honor of former North Carolina State and USA Basketball Head Coach Kay Yow, the
Play 4Kay program is a global, unified effort for a nation of coaches to assist
in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in
communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the WBCA
and The V Foundation, is the official Play 4Kay charity.
