WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Bolstered by first half goals from senior Shawn Guderian and junior
Ettienne Boulanger and a clean sheet from senior Brandon Miller, UNCW topped
Wofford, 2-0, to win the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott Classic on Sunday at the
UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks raised their mark to 2-3 with their second
straight win and their fifth tournament title in seven seasons. The Terriers
saw their record dip to 2-3 with the road loss.
Guderian provided what would be the winning goal when he
knocked home a rebound off the post in the 37th minute. Freshman Matt Feigler
was credited with an assist after his shot from 18 yards out caromed off the
right post and onto the feet of Guderian, who was six yards out.
Boulanger, meanwhile, added a second goal in the 40th minute
when a cross from junior Cody Frennea found him open in the middle of the
penalty box during a counter attack that started with a Wofford turnover at
midfield.
Miller fashioned his first shutout of the season, making
seven saves, including a point-blank stop with 21 minutes remaining to keep it
a two-goal advantage.
UNCW outshot the Terriers, 17-13, with Wofford goalie Ben
Limbaugh recording five saves. Terrier midfielder Alex Hutchins tallied four
shots, including three on frame.
The Seahawks claimed the tournament title with a +3 goal
differential, edging Campbell, a 3-2 winner of Hartford earlier in the day, at
+2.
Next up for the Seahawks is their Colonial Athletic
Association season opener on Sept. 17 against reigning champion William &
Mary. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
