WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW men avenged a loss last week to Campbell and the women came in second as the 22nd Seahawk Invitational basked in near-perfect weather late Friday on the campus recreation fields.

The Seahawk men nosed out the Camels, 28-32, to capture first place in the 10-team field. The UNCW women, meanwhile, lost by a 26-49 score to the Camels, who had three of the top five finishers on the women's side.

"Our goal for the men was to turn the table on Campbell after narrowly losing to them last week and we did that," said Layne Schwier, assistant cross country/track and field coach. "Our women wanted to close the gap on Campbell and we also accomplished that."

Senior Wil Zahorodny and Kelly Carmichael were joined by freshman Casey Budenbaum as the Seahawks registered three of the top five finishers in the 5k men's race. Zahorodny finished second with a 15:35 time, Carmichael came in fifth at 15;58 and Buddenbaum took fourth with a time of 15:57.

"Wil went out pretty hard because it was important for him to test himself today. We had good results from many of the freshmen. Casey had a PR and Kelly was solid. Our top seven runners consisted of four seniors and three freshmen."

Campbell's Nicol-Samuel DeLohnni won the men's race with a time of 15:24, turning the tide on Zahorodny after the Damascus, Md., product captured first last week in Buies Creek.

In the women's race, also a 5k, the Camels dominated with a 2-4-5 finish. Although Barton's Ericka Skinner blew away the field with a convincing 25-second win, Campbell featured five of the top eight in the standings. Skinner covered the flat course easily in 18:12.

Senior Erin Brennan was UNCW's top runner. The Jamestown, R.I., product finished in third place with a time of 18:57.

"Our goal for the women was to close the gap on Campbell. We still have several of our key runners out of the lineup and we ran better than last week. Once everyone gets healthy, we should be much better.

The Seahawks travel to Hampton, Ga., next week for the GSU Invitational on Saturday. The race will be contested at the site of the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Championships, slated for Saturday, Oct. 29.

      Final Men's Standings: UNCW, 28; Campbell, 32; N.C. State Club, 123; Barton, 129; St. Andrews, 153; Shaw, 195; Pfeiffer, 203; Francis Marion, 206; Coker, 217; Methodist, 225.
