FLORENCE, South Carolina - Junior midfielder Amanda Holmes tallied a goal and an assist and junior keeper Caitlin Hunter made three saves for her sixth career shutout as UNCW defeated Francis Marion, 2-0, in collegiate women's soccer action Friday at the FMU Soccer Field.

The contest served as the season opener for both schools. UNCW continues its six-game road swing Aug. 26 with a 7 p.m. contest at East Carolina. FMU wraps up its opening weekend Sunday with a 4 p.m. home matchup against High Point.

Holmes got the Seahawks on the board at the 29:42 mark of the contest with an unassisted effort that saw the Chesapeake, Va., product beat Patriots keeper Lauren Vetock with a shot from the top of the box on the left-hand side.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of UNCW until the 78th minute, when senior Laura Wilson chipped a shot over Vetock from 15 yards out to give the Seahawks a 2-0 advantage. Holmes was credited with an assist on the play.

Hunter stopped all three shots she faced as the UNCW defense held FMU to just six shots for the afternoon.  The Seahawks tallied 20 shots for the game as Vetock finished with eight saves. UNCW also attempted the only corner kick of the game, taken in the first minute of the contest.
