CONWAY, South Carolina - The UNCW softball team was swept by Coastal Carolina, 3-0 and 9-0, in a collegeiate softball doubleheader Tuesday at the Coastal Carolina Softball Field.
The Chanticleers improved to 19-26 overall with the sweep while the Seahawks slipped to 11-36 as they saw their losing streak extended to seven games.
Coastal jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one as sophomore Jazmin Daigle ripped a one-out single through the left side to plate freshman Brooke Donovan before a Seahawks error allowed freshman Jessie Winans to score from third for the second run of the frame.
UNCW threatened to get on the board in the fifth, using a single and a pair of walks to load the bases with two outs. Chanticleers freshman Ashley Bagwell was able to work out of the jam, however, retiring the next batter she faced to end the inning.
Sophomore Cacia Pierce closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, recording a two-out double to center field that scored junior Sarah Maples from second to give the Chanticleers a 3-0 cushion.
Bagwell was credited with the win for Coastal Carolina to improve to 10-11 on the season as she scattered four hits in seven innings in the circle to record her second shutout of the season. She struck out 10 and walked two.
Daigle and Maples were both 2-for-4 at the plate to pace the Chanticleers lineup in the opener while Daigle and Pierce finished with one RBI each.
Senior Samme Lisowsky took the loss as she moved to 2-14 on the campaign. Lisowsky allowed three runs on seven hits and six walks in seven innings of work. She struck out six.
Coastal once again struck in the first inning of the nightcap, plating three runs on a one-out double by junior Chelsea Pineda and a two-run home run to left center by Daigle to build the early advantage.
The Chanticleers added a single run in the third on a run-scoring single by Pierre to take a 4-0 lead before exploding for five runs on four hits and two UNCW errors in the fourth to build a 9-0 cushion. A Seahawks error allowed the first run of the frame to score before Pierre hit a 2-0 offering just inside the right field foul pole for a grand slam. The blast was Pierre's fourth home run of the season.
Senior Katie Edwards picked up the victory for Coastal Carolina in game two to move to 4-5 on the season. Edwards allowed two hits - singles to Houmard and Torres - and walked one in five innings to record her first shutout of the season.
Daigle, Donovon and Pierre were all 2-for-3 to power a Chanticleer attack that finished with nine hits in the contest. Pierre recorded five RBI, Daigle finished with two and junior Chelsea Pineda tallied one RBI.
Both teams return to action Friday with conference doubleheaders. UNCW is at Delaware in a 2:30 p.m. start while CCU is at Presbyterian for a 2 p.m. twinbill.
