WILMINGTON, N.C. Former UNC Wilmington men’s basketball guard Mark Gary will be honored by the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of its Silver Anniversary Team in late March.

The honor recognizes Indiana players who have contributed to the state’s prep basketball lore over the last 25 years. Gary, from Anderson, Ind., will be recognized at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Annual Men’s Banquet on March 25, 2009. The ceremony will take at the Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.

Gary played four years for the Seahawks and former skippers Mel Gibson and Robert McPherson from 1985-88, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing in 1988.  He captained the Seahawks in two of his four years as a starter and ranks 49th on the all-time scoring list with 663 points. Gary averaged 5.7 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.8 steals per game during his career in Wilmington.

The Seahawks went 61-55 during Gary’s tenure. In 1987, UNCW reached the CAA Tournament championship game, but lost to Navy and college basketball great David Robinson, 53-50.

During his high school career, Gary averaged 24.3 points and 4.8 rebounds at Anderson Highland. A three-year starter, Gary helped Anderson Highland post a record of 59-11, and he was selected to the Indiana All-Star team, the AP All-State team and he received All-County, All-Sectional and All-Central Indiana Conference honors two years.
