WILMINGTON, N.C. – Mike Rooney tripled, homered and scored three runs as UNC Wilmington topped No.14 East Carolina, 8-3, to snap an eight-game losing streak and give Head Coach Mark Scalf his 574th career win, tying program founder Bill Brooks for most career wins at UNCW.
The Seahawks improved to 18-11 with the key mid-week win while the Pirates dropped to 25-7 with their second straight loss. The win also snapped a six-game losing streak to the Pirates for the Seahawks.
Freshman Tyler McSwain evened his record at 1-1 in a predetermined start. In 2 2/3 innings, McSwain allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Fellow rookie Mike Wright (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and a pair of walks in 3 2/3 innings. Sthil Sowers gave ECU solid relief, striking out four and allowing one run in three innings out of the bullpen.
Joining Rooney with multi-hit games were freshman Thomas Pope and junior Robbie Monday, each with two hits.
Every starter had a hit for ECU, who left a season-high 15 runners on base.
UNCW plated two runs on two hits and an ECU error to take a 2-0 lead after one inning. Sophomore Cody Stanley, who doubled with one out, scored on a fielding error on a ball hit by junior Grayson Evans for the first run. Monday singled to right to send Evans around to third where he would score on junior Bobby Leeper’s ground ball to second.
The Seahawks ran into trouble in the top of the second as ECU strung together three singles, with one out, capped by a RBI knock to right by Dustin Harrington, who had two hits, scored a run and drove one in, that made it 2-1. Following a strikeout for the second out, Trent Whitehead tied the game with a single, his second of the game, to center.
Junior Matt Holt regained the lead for UNCW in the bottom of the inning when he plated Rooney, who tripled off Wight to lead off the frame.
UNCW scored four in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Rooney led off with a homer to left center to kick things off for the Seahawks, who sent eight batters to the plate in the inning. Evans later doubled in two runs and came around to score on a single off the bat of Monday through the rightside.
ECU opened the fifth with a walk and a single off UNCW freshman reliever Steven Davis, who then walked Devon Harris to load the bases with none out. Davis pitched out of the jam with a fly ball out and then a ground ball double play to end it.
Davis walked Harrington to lead off the sixth and then walked Zach Wright, after which he was lifted from the game in favor of junior Bryan Booth. Booth retired the first two batters he faced, but Stephen Batts singled through the left side to score one. Booth limited the damage to that lone run by striking out Drew Schieber to end the inning.
ECU again got its leadoff hitter on base when UNCW sophomore reliever Stephen Harrold walked Whitehead to open the eighth. But Ryan Wood grounded into a double play to clear the bases. Batts drew the second walk of the inning and moved around to third on a Seahawk error. Harrold ended the threat with a ground out to second base.
The Pirates tried to mount a comeback in the ninth putting runners on first and second, but with one out Harrold rolled his second double play ball of the evening to end the game.
The Seahawks return to Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday when they host William & Mary. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
