DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Andrew Cain and sophomore Cody Stanley had three hits apiece and junior Mike Rooney knocked in three runs as UNC Wilmington topped North Carolina Central, 13-2, in college baseball action Wednesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Seahawks improved to 15-2 with their sixth straight win while the Eagles dropped to 3-8.
Sophomore Justin Bradley (2-0) picked up the win coming out of the bullpen. Bradley tossed three innings of hitless baseball while striking out four.
In the first inning, UNCW exploded for six runs on five hits with Stanley hitting a RBI triple and Rooney adding a 2-run triple later in the inning as nine batters made their way to the plate against NCCU starter and losing pitcher Brandon Oatis (1-1).
Stanley belted his fourth homer of the season in the second inning as UNCW extended its lead to 7-0.
UNCW plated another run in the fourth without aid of a hit to take an 8-0 lead.
The Eagles got on the board in the fourth as they reached UNCW starter Stephen Harrold for two runs on two hits, a hit batter and a walk. Anthony Wilson drove in both runs with a bases loaded single.
Freshman Thomas Pope scored on the back end of a double steal in the fifth to push UNCW’s lead to 9-2.
Junior Matt Holt scored UNCW’s 10th run of the game on a throwing error in the seventh inning to take an eight-run lead. Holt was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. On the fielder’s choice, Holt would score on an errant throw.
Cain’s third hit of the evening knocked in a run to give UNCW an 11-2 advantage in the eighth. A wild pitch by NCCU reliever Joseph Cobb allowed the second run of the inning to score and a RBI double off the wall in left by Rooney capped the scoring in the inning as UNCW built an 11-run cushion, 13-2.
The Seahawks return to Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday at 7 p.m. against Virginia Commonwealth.
