WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington’s 4x400 relay team of senior Justin Anderson, sophomore Jared Clark, freshman Nick Pederzolli and senior Chris Courson finished first with a time of 3:13.18 and lifted the Seahawks to their second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association men’s track and field championship on Saturday at Zable Stadium on the campus of William & Mary.
The Lady Seahawks finished in sixth as while William & Mary claimed the women’s title.
“This was the most exciting championship I’ve been a part of,” said Head Coach Jim Sprecher. “This is a special group of seniors and it’s satisfying to see them go out on top. We take pride in our relays and they excelled this meet.”
Trailing William & Mary by 2 1/2 points entering the final race of the meet, UNCW earned 10 points with the win while the Tribe finished fifth for four points, giving the Seahawks the title. Overall it was UNCW’s ninth CAA championship. “We played catch up all day, but we never felt we were out of it at any point.” The Seahawks trailed by 65 points after 12 events.
Keying the Seahawks on Saturday’s drive to the championship were individual title winners senior Ernest Asante, Uri Robinson and Brian Blumenstein.
Asante won both the 110 and 400 Hurdles events, posting times of 14.50 and 52.59, respectively.
Blumenstein, meanwhile, won the Decathlon with a school-record 6,581 points. Following Blumenstein and giving UNCW much needed points in the event were senior Chris Black (6515) and junior Matt Miller (6484), who finished second and third, respectively.
UNCW’s 4x100 Relay finished second with a time of 41.19 while Courson (47.64) and sophomore Devon Watlington (53.41) posted second-place finishes in the 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles, respectively.
On the women’s side, junior Aisha Jones finished second in the 100 Hurdles with a school-record tying time of 13.99. Jones also finished in a tie for third in the High Jump with a mark of 5-5.
The Seahawks return to action on Apr. 24, when they participate in the Penn Relays.
