HEMPSTEAD, New York – Senior guard Annie Payton tallied a game-high 18 points to lead Hofstra to a 55-43 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball action Friday at the Mack Sports Complex.

The Pride improved to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in CAA action as it swept the season series from the Seahawks, who moved to 3-18 and 2-5 with the setback.

Payton was 7-of-9 from the floor to pace a Hofstra lineup that shot just 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor for the contest, including a 7-of-24 (.292) effort from the field in the second half. Sophomore Jakelle King-Gilchrist joined Payton in double figures with 11 points while senior Anma Onyeuku chipped in nine.

Reigning CAA Rookie-of-the-Week Ryan Flowers matched her season high with 17 points and added eight rebounds to lead UNCW, who was a frigid 13-for-40 from the field (.325) for the game. Fellow newcomer Naqiayyah Teague pitched in eight points and added six rebounds while freshman Brie Mobley added six points and a team-high four assists.

Holding a 28-24 lead early in the second half, Payton knocked down two 3-pointers and a pair free throws over a six-minute span to key a 16-4 spurt and give the Pride its largest lead of the game, 44-28, with 10:30 remaining.

Hofstra held a 48-33 lead with just over under seven minutes left to play when a jumper from the from the free-throw line by Mobley started an 8-1 stretch that pulled the Seahawks within eight, 49-41. The Pride kept the Seahawks from getting any closer, tallying five of the last seven points of the game to determine the final 12-point margin.  

Earlier in the contest, Hofstra built a 28-22 lead in the first half, capitalizing on an 18-5 run in the first half that lasted just over eight minutes and saw the Seahawks make just one of their eight field goal attempts during the spurt.

Both teams return to action Sunday with road contests. UNCW travels to Northeastern while Hofstra is at Drexel. Tip off for both contests is set for 2 p.m.

GAME NOTES:

  • Hofstra increased its lead in the all-time series over UNCW to 14-12 as it picked up its fourth straight victory in the series.
  • Hofstra’s bench outscored its starting lineup by a 34-21 margin as five of the six bench players who saw playing time tallied two or more points in the game.
  • UNCW recorded double digits assists for the eighth time this season and the third time in the last four games as they finished with 11 assists on 13 baskets.
  • The Seahawks shot below 33 percent from the floor for second straight contest and the ninth time this season.
  • UNCW shot above 70 percent from the free-throw line for the seventh time this season as it was 16-of-22 (.727) at the charity stripe.
  • The Seahawks 26 turnovers matched their season high in that category, equaling their total against Wake Forest on Dec. 16.
  • UNCW was 1-of-6 from 3-point range, marking the first time in three games that the Seahawks have made at least one shot from beyond the arc.
  • The Seahawks moved to 0-18 this season when it trails by 10 points or more in a contest.
