Veteran goalkeeper coach John Adams joined the UNCW women's soccer program as an assistant coach in April 2013.

“We’re excited about the addition of John to our program,” said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “He’s a very knowledgeable coach. He has great energy and a genuine enthusiasm for teaching. In addition, he has an excellent grasp of what it takes to recruit the best qualified student-athletes to UNCW. His connections and contacts are a great complement to what we already have in place.”

In addition to his work with the program’s goalies, Adams will assist in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, travel, scheduling and player development.

“It is an honor to have been considered for this position given the competitive nature of today’s soccer coaching market,” said Adams. “Based on Paul’s qualitative academic and athletic emphasis he places on his players, I feel confident that I will have a chance to make a honest impact in the development of the program.  At the same time, I am excited to learn from an experienced mentor whose accomplishments are proven both in the CAA and NCAA.”

Adams joins the Seahawks program after three seasons as an assistant coach at Rice. While with the Owls, Adams helped coach Nicky Adams’ squad earn a share of its first Conference USA regular season title in 2012 and qualify for the league championship in all three of his seasons with the program.

The Rice goalkeepers excelled under Adams. Catherine Fitzsimmons became the school's first soccer alum to play professionally overseas and her replacement, Amy Czyz, earned national and Conference USA honors during her freshman season. Adams also served as the program’s recruiting coordinator, playing a key role in the recruitment of the 2012 CUSA Freshman-of-the-Year as well as the program’s first international player.

Adams joined Rice after working three seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s programs at Houston Baptist. At HBU, he assisted with all areas of the program, helping the Huskies average nine wins while competing at both the NAIA and NCAA Division I level.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Adams was a four-year member of the men’s soccer program at Cincinnati, earning All-Conference USA accolades during his senior season when he posted the second lowest single-season goal against average in school history (0.72). He graduated from Cincinnati with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2004.

Following graduation, Adams embarked on his coaching career by working as a volunteer assistant with the Bearcats’ program. He also served as the Director of Coaching at the Southeast Cincinnati Soccer Association for two seasons while also working as a volunteer coaching role at his alma mater. Adams played professionally for the Cincinnati Excite, helping the American Indoor Soccer League (AISL) franchise capture the 2005 National Indoor Championship.

Adams is a member of both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the United States Soccer Federation and a national certification from both organizations, including a Premier Coaching Diploma from the NSCAA. He also served as an assistant coach for the Puerto Rican women's national team during the 2009 season, assisting the squad with training and scouting during the 2009 campaign.
