WILMINGTON, Carolina - UNCW women's soccer Head Coach Paul Cairney has announced the signing of 12 players to National Letters-of-Intent during the spring signing period.

The class includes Lindsey Byrne, Morgan Byrne, Katrina Guillou, Courtney Kovac, Morgan Leyble, Maddie McCormick, Mikayla Plansker, Greyson Ray, Abby Register, Karissa Smith, Allison Stearns and Liz Thompson. All 13 players will enroll in classes in the fall and join the Seahawks as freshmen for the 2012 season.

"We are very excited for our team to have a group of incoming players who will add depth and competition at every position," said Cairney. "But, it does not matter what these players have achieved in high school or with their respective club teams. It is important; however, what they achieve once they get here."

"This class is large in number due to the fact that we graduated eight seniors last season and will graduate seven seniors this season," Cairney added. "The net loss of 15 players over two seasons dictated that we bring in a bigger than normal class. The numbers in our 2012 class also has a direct impact on our 2013 recruiting class. It allows us to be patient and be very specific and selective in that process."

The class features eight in-state products as well as players from Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Of the eight in-state players, three - Lindsey Byrne, Morgan Byrne and Stearns - play together at W.A. Hough in Charlotte.

"While these new players will add competition on our team, our coaching staff is very excited about our returning players," said Cairney. "They are training with an edge right now and are determined to bring our team back to the top in the CAA. When we combine this fact with this new talent, our 2012 season is one filled with promise.
