Tribe Uses Quick Start To Stun Seahawks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina -Junior Mallory Schaffer tallied two goals and added an assist to lead William and Mary to a 3-0 victory over UNCW Sunday in Colonial Athletic Association action at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Tribe improved to 9-1-2 overall and remained undefeated in league play with a 4-0 mark while the Seahawks slipped to 2-9 and 0-3. UNCW is back in action Oct. with a 7 p.m. CAA contest at VCU.
Schaffer opened the scoring at the 8:11 mark as she converted a penalty kick opportunity created when she was fouled by a Seahawks defender inside the box.
Schaffer doubled the Tribe's advantage to 2-0 in the 21st minute, heading home a cross from freshman Anna Madden for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Junior Cortlyn Bristol capped W&M's first-half surge less than two minutes after Scheffer's second goal as she put a shot from 16 yards out inside the left post to make it 3-0. The strike was Bristol's fifth goal of the season. Schaffer was credited with an assist on the play.
The Tribe held an 11-6 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by a 5-0 edge in the first half. UNCW took four of the six corner kicks awarded in the contest.
Junior Katherine Yount made one save between the pipes for the Tribe to record her league-leading seventh shutout of the season. Senior Chandler Follett, making her first start of the season in goal for UNCW, finished with three saves.
