WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Sophomore Heather Botelho scored the only goal of the contest midway through the first half to lead North Florida to a 1-0 victory over host UNCW in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Ospreys moved to 4-4-1 on the season with the one-goal victory while the Seahawks slipped to 2-5. Both teams return to action Sunday in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational as North Florida faces Richmond at 11 a.m. while UNCW takes on Western Carolina in the tournament finale at 1:30 p.m.
Botelho's decisive strike came at the 25:55 mark, just moments after UNCW junior Stephanie Rose was denied an opportunity to opening the scoring when her shot attempt from 25 yards out was deflected by Osprey's keeper Megan Dorsey off the crossbar before being cleared away.
Following a North Florida corner kick, Botelho took a feed from sophomore Keara Murphy on the right side of the boxand placed a ball over Seahawks keeper Caitlin Hunter and into the left-side panel of the net for her second goal of the season.
Rose would provide the Seahawks their best chance to level the score late in the second half, weaving through the North Florida defense with just over two minutes remaining before emerging on a breakaway against Dorsey, who charged off her line and made a sliding save to end the threat and keep UNCW off the board.
Dorsey finished with two saves in the contest while Hunter recorded six stops between the pipes for the Seahawks. UNCW held a slim 9-8 shot advantage in the contest while North Florida was credited with six of the eight corner kicks awarded.
