CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - Freshman Amanda Jones scored in the 85th minute to break a scoreless tie and lead Charlotte to a 1-0 victory over UNCW in collegiate women's soccer action Saturday at Transamerica Field.
The 49ers, who picked up their first home victory of the season with the one-goal triumph, improved to 2-1-2 on the campaign while the Seahawks slipped to 1-2 overall. UNCW continues its weekend road trip Sunday with a 2 p.m. matinee at Davidson.
"We played a good first half and we created some quality chances," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "I felt that we lost our shape for long spells in the second half. Charlotte did a great job today and had a great finish for the goal. The key for our team is how we react and how we rebound for tomorrow's game against a quality Davidson side."
Jones broke a 0-0 tie at the 84:50 mark when she coralled a cross from sophomore Brooke Malloy and beat Seahawks junior keeper Caitlin Hunter with a shot into the right-hand corner of the net. Senior Macky Wingo was also credited with an assist on the play.
Charlotte held a 17-8 advantage in shots in the contest and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks taken. Hunter finished with three saves in goal for the Seahawks while sophomore Alex Kubrick was not credited with a save for Charlotte as she recorded her second shutout of the season.
