ELON, North Carolina – Sophomore Katrina Guillou scored in the 79th minute to lead UNCW to a 1-1 draw with Elon in an exhibition women’s soccer match Saturday at Rudd Field.
Playing their second and final exhibition contest of the preseason, the Seahawks fell behind in the 30th minute as senior Catherine Brinkman converted a rebound opportunity to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
Guillou would draw the Seahawks level in the 79th minute, placing a shot from 18 yards out into the back right corner of the net for the equalizer.
“Tonight was another good opportunity for us to play a quality opponent,” said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “Elon is a very well-coached team and disciplined in their approach. The soggy surface definitely played a factor for both teams. We created some excellent chances and this is something we can build on as we prepare to play our season opener next Friday versus South Carolina.”
Freshman Liisa Rahkola got the start in goal for the Seahawks and made three saves. Fellow freshman Carolyn Huddy replaced Rahkola at the half and recorded two saves over the final 45 minutes.
UNCW held an 11-8 shot advantage in the contest taken while Elon posted a 4-3 edge in corner kicks taken.
UNCW opens the regular season Aug. 23 in a 7 p.m. contest at South Carolina.
