|Seahawks Double Up Lancers To Take Title|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW erupted for four goals,in the second half, including a pair of tallies from Tournament MVP Maddie McCormick, to defeat Longwood, 4-2, in the UNCW Courtyard Marriott Wilmington Invitational Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 3-5 overall as they captured the tournament title for the second consecutive season and picked up their third victory in four outings. The Lancers, meanwhile, moved to 1-4-2 as they finished the weekend with a 1-1 record.
Following a scoreless first half, sophomore Katrina Guillou got the Seahawks on the board at the 47:42 mark, using a pass from McCormick to get behind the Lancers defense before placing the ball past keeper Shelby Hall for her second goal of the season.
McCormick doubled the Seahawks advantage to 2-0 in the 52nd minute when her shot from 13 yards out deflected off a Longwood defender and into the left-hand side of the net.
UNCW would maintain its two-goal edge until the 81:26 mark, when Longwood sophomore Olivia Colella began a frantic stretch that saw the two teams score four goals in a 3:45 span as she put home a rebound to cut the Lancers deficit to 2-1. Freshman Gina D’Orazio was credited with an assist on the play.
McCormick stretched the Seahawks advantage back to two, 3-1, just 32 seconds after Colella’s strike when she knocked home a loose ball from 15 yards out. The Lancers would quickly trim the UNCW lead to one, 3-2, on a goal by junior Samantha Phillips just 12 seconds later, but junior Stephanie Bronson converted a cross from freshman Caroline McClain at the 85:11 mark to make it 4-2 and close out the scoring.
Freshman Liisa Rahkola got the start in goal for the Seahawks and made five saves. Hall finished the contest with three stops for the Lancers.
UNCW held a 20-13 shot advantage in the contest, including a 10-5 margin in the first half. The Seahawks also attempted six of the nine corner kicks awarded.
UNCW returns to action Thursday as it hosts Coastal Carolina in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Longwood is back on the pitch Sept. 22 when they entertain Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison in a 7 p.m. contest.
