WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women's soccer team begins preparation for the 2012 season Saturday as it opens preseason training at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Veteran coach Paul Cairney, entering his 19th season with the program and 17th as head coach, welcomes back 16 letterwinners and seven starters from last season's club, including Third-Team All-CAA selection and leading scorer Stephanie Rose.

Fellow seniors Kim Currie and Amanda Holmes are also back to support the attack after finishing second and third in scoring a season ago. Senior defenders Lindsay Henry, Jen Ludemann and Ali Nagle and senior keeper Caitlin Hunter return to provide depth and experience in the final third.

Cairney will also have plenty of fresh faces on the field as 19 newcomers, including 17 freshmen, are part of the preseason roster. Among the newcomers are Stephanie Bronson and Taber Lewis, who join the program after playing as freshman at NC State and High Point, respectively.

UNCW will host UNC Chapel Hill in a 6 p.m. exhibition contest Aug. 8 at the UNCW Soccer Stadium before starting the regular season Aug. 17 at Virginia Tech. The Seahawks open the home portion of their 2012 slate Aug. 31 against Charlotte.
