WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior guard LeCoya Terry poured in 23 points as East Carolina rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit for a 68-63 win over UNC Wilmington on Sunday in women’s basketball action at Trask Coliseum.
The win, the Pirates first road victory of the season, raised ECU record to 5-3 and halted a brief two-game skid. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped their third straight outing and dipped to 4-3 on the season.
Trailing 51-41 at the 12:55 mark, Terry scored the first five points to ignite the 16-5 rally that would give the Pirates a 57-56 lead with 5:50 left. Terry finished with eight points in the deciding run.
Joining Terry in double digits were Jasmine Young and Kim Gay with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Young dished out a game-best six assists and pulled down seven rebounds while Gay added six caroms.
Junior Greta Luksyte led four Seahawks in double digits with 13 points. Senior Sahsha Taylor had 12 points and nine rebounds, sophomore Brittany Blackwell had 11 and sophomore Treasure Johnson added 10 points off the bench. Taylor grabbed nine rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double while Luksyte matched her career-high with eight and Blackwell and junior Candace Walker added seven caroms each as UNCW held a 42-38 edge in that category.
UNCW managed to narrow the deficit to three, 66-63, with 54 seconds on the clock, but could get no closer. The Seahawks were held to one field goal, a 3-pointer by Johnson, over the final 6:39 of the game.
East Carolina rattled off the first 11 points of the game and built a 17-5 lead following Chareya Best’s layup at the 13:29 mark. UNCW answered, though, with a 16-3 run, fueled by Taylor’s five points, to take its first lead of the game, 21-20, on a short jumper on the right wing by Luksyte with 5:52 remaining in the first half.
The Seahawks continued their run late run, building an eight-point lead, 34-26, after Luksyte knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:18 showing.
UNCW returns to the hardwood on Dec. 18, when it visits Coastal Carolina for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Pirates host Gardner-Webb on Dec. 16 for a 7 p.m. start at Minges Coliseum.
