WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women’s basketball team closes out the non-conference portion of its 2013-14 schedule Friday as it faces Charlotte in a Noon matinee at Halton Arena.

The Seahawks (1-12) head into their final non-league contest of the season looking to halt a losing skid that reached 10 games with a 54-47 setback to Appalachian State on New Year’s Eve at Trask Coliseum.

Junior Kelva Atkins tallied a game-high 18 points and matched a career-high with five steals, but the Mountaineers used a 14-2 run late in the contest to pull away from the Seahawks. Atkins was the only player to reach double figures as freshmen Brie Mobley and Naqaiyyah Teague chipped in eight points each. Teague also pulled-down a game-best nine rebounds.

Like UNCW, Charlotte (5-7) heads into its final non-conference contest looking to build some momentum after suffering a heart-breaking 76-75 home setback to Furman on Dec. 29.

Senior guard Ny Hammonds paces a balanced 49ers attack that features four players averaging more than nine points per game with a 12.1 scoring average and 55 assists. Sophomore Kira Gordon (11.5) and junior Hillary Sigmon (10.9) have provided scoring depth for coach Cara Consuegra’s squad while redshirt junior Gaby Tyler has served as Charlotte’s top rebounding presence, grabbing a team-best 7.6 caroms per outing.

Friday’s contest marks the 19th meeting between UNCW and Charlotte. The 49ers hold a 13-5 lead in the all-time series and have won six of the last seven meetings, including a 63-58 triumph last December at Trask Coliseum.

UNCW brings a 2-7 mark in nine previous visits to the Queen City into Friday’s contest.  The Seahawks were victorious in their last visit to Halton Arena, rallying from an 11-point deficit in the final minutes to record a 74-73 victory over the 49ers on Dec. 7, 2011.

UNCW returns to action Jan. 9 as it opens Colonial Athletic Association play with a 7 p.m. contest against Northeastern at Trask Coliseum.
