UPPER MARLBORO, Maryland - Fifth-seeded UNCW continues play in the 2012 Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Women's Basketball Championship Friday with a quarterfinal contest against No. 4 seed Hofstra. The Seahawks (19-11) advanced to the quarterfinals for the fifth straight season with a 66-59 victory over Georgia State Thursday during first-round action. Sophomore Abria Trice scored 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half, to lead a UNCW attack that shot just 33.3 percent from the floor against the Panthers. Junior Tawanna Lee and sophomore Alisha Andrews chipped nine points each while junior Karneshia Garrett added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds as the Seahawks held a commanding 51-38 edge on the glass. Hofstra (19-10) makes its tournament debut on Friday after earning a first-round bye by way of a tie-breaker with UNCW. The Seahawks and Pride finished the regular season tied for fourth place in the regular season standings, but Hofstra was awarded the higher seed by way of its 66-55 victory over UNCW in the lone regular season meeting between the two programs on Feb. 26 in Hempstead. Junior and First-Team All-CAA selection Shante Evans leads the Pride in both scoring (18.4) and rebounding (10.4) while Third-Team All-CAA honoree senior Candice Bellocchio paces the league in assists (6.1). Bellocchio was recognized as the 2012 recipient of the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award on Wednesday. The winner of Friday's quarterfinal contest will advance to face the winner of No. 1 Delaware vs. No. 8 Old Dominion Saturday in the first semifinal at Noon. |
