WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNC Wilmington freshman point guard Alisha Andrews has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie-of-the-Week for a fifth time this season, league officials announced Monday.
Andrews becomes just the second player in the CAA to earn the recognition five times this season as the Stone Mountain, Ga., product was also honored for the weeks of Nov. 22, Jan. 3, Jan. 22 and Feb. 14.
In addition, Andrews becomes just the second player in program history to earn the award on five occasions during their rookie season, joining former standout Sahsha Taylor in that exclusive category.
"We are excited to learn that Alisha has once again been recognized as the Rookie-of-the-Week by the Colonial Athletic Association," said UNCW Head Coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke."Alisha continues to improve every time she steps on the floor and her continued improvement at the point guard position has been a vital part of our success this season. As with any individual honor, however, the entire program shares in her recognition."
Andrews averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 assists and 2.5 steals in leading UNCW to victories over Towson and George Mason last week as she helped the squad match the program mark for victories in a season with 22. She opened the week with a 13-point, nine-assist effort in the Seahawks 76-47 victory at Towson last Thursday and capped the week with an 11-point, seven-assist and five-steal performance in a 74-56 triumph over George Mason in the team's home finale on Sunday.
UNCW (22-6; 14-3 CAA) closes out the regular season Wednesday with a visit to league-leading James Madison for a 7 p.m. contest. The Seahawks can earn a share of the regular-season title with a victory over the host Dukes.
