WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior guard Kelva Atkins was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Co-Player-of-the-Week on Monday.
Atkins, who shared the honor with James Madison’s Kirby Burkholder, is the first UNCW player to receive the honor this season. It is also the first time that Atkins has received the honor in her career.
“‘Kelva had a great week for us,” said UNCW Head Coach Adell Harris. “I’m happy for her and hope that she can continue to perform at a high level over the next few weeks.”
Atkins averaged 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in leading UNCW to 1-1 record in its final two home contests of the season. The Stem, N.C., product shot 46.7 percent from the floor and 86.7 percent at the free-throw line as she played 79 of a possible 80 minutes in the two contests.
Atkins opened the week with her first career double-double, posting 18 points and grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds in a 67-53 setback to College of Charleston on Feb. 20. She followed that effort with a game-high 23 points and six rebounds in the Seahawks dramatic 60-59 triumph over Towson on Sunday. Atkins was 8-of-14 from the floor and a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line against the Tigers, including a pair of tosses from the charity stripe with 1.4 seconds remaining to erase a one-point deficit and give the Seahawks the victory.
The Seahawks (4-24; 3-11 CAA) return to action Thursday with a 7 p.m. contest at Drexel.
