Cancun, Mexico - The UNCW women’s basketball team opens the Cancun Challenge Thursday with a Thanksgiving-day matchup against Boston College.

Tip off for the Seahawks (1-4) and Eagles (2-2) is set for 6 p.m. at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Live stats and streaming video are available for the game and can be accessed by clicking on the links above.

UNCW is making its second trip to Cancun in program history. The Seahawks took part in the 2008 Cancun Thanksgiving Classic, defeating Fordham in the first round, 53-48, before falling to South Carolina in the championship game, 57-54. The Seahawks are also just the third CAA school to compete in the Cancun Challenge. Hofstra posted a 2-0 mark during its appearance in 2011 while James Madison has compiled a 4-3 mark in three visits to the event (2008, 2010 & 2012).

UNCW returns to the hardwood Thursday for the first time since suffering a 55-50 setback to visiting Tulane Nov. 22 at Trask Coliseum. Junior Kelva Atkins scored 14 points to lead three Seahawks in double figures and freshman Naqaiyyah Teague posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but an 8-1 run by the Green Wave late in the second half proved to be the difference.

The Seahawks out-rebounded Tulane, 41-40, and forced the Green Wave into a season-high 18 turnovers, but UNCW struggled shooting the ball, connecting on a season-low 29.2 percent (19-of-65) of its attempts from the floor and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) of its tries at the free-throw line.

Like UNCW, Boston College heads into Thursday’s matchup coming off a lengthy break, having last played in an 89-69 victory over Florida international on Nov. 21 at Conte Forum. Senior Kristen Doherty has been the focal point of the Eagles lineup in the early going as she leads Head Coach Erik Johnson’s squad in points (15.0), rebounds (7.3) and steals (2.8). Sophomore Nicole Boudreau and freshman Kelly Hughes have provided scoring depth, averaging 13.5 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

Thursday’s contest marks the second meeting between UNCW and Boston College. The Eagles won the first meeting, 85-55, at Conte Forum on Dec. 19, 2010.

UNCW continues its Cancun Challenge slate Friday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Southern California.
