The UNCW women's basketball team announced its 2012-13 non-conference schedule on Tuesday, an 11-game slate that features four home dates and seven road contests.
WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW Head Coach Adell Harris revealed the women's basketball non-conference schedule for the 2012-13 season Tuesday, an 11-game slate that features four home contests and seven road matchups.

Coming off back-to-back Postseason WNIT appearances, the Seahawks will once again face a challenging non-conference slate. Seven teams qualified for postseason competition last season, including NCAA Tournament participants Liberty, Northern Kentucky and West Virginia. In addition, nine of the 11 non-conference opponents won 15 or more contests one year ago, with six of those teams - Liberty, Northern Kentucky, Richmond, Tulane, Wake Forest and West Virginia - all reaching the 20-win milestone.

"The late Skip Prosser, used to say, 'You can't sharpen your teeth eating oatmeal,'" Harris said.  "Our non-conference schedule is extremely challenging and will play a huge role in our team's preparation for CAA play. We open the season on the road at West Virginia and Wake Forest, and we have some of the best mid-major programs in the country on our schedule. With seven of our 11 non-conference games on the road versus good coaches and good programs, we'll find out early what we're made of.  I welcome the challenge."

The Seahawks begin preparations for the season with an exhibition contest against UNC Pembroke on Nov. 3 at Trask Coliseum before opening the regular season with three straight road matchups; a stretch that starts with a visit to new Big 12 member West Virginia (Nov. 9) and includes trips to in-state foes Wake Forest (Nov. 14) and Elon (Nov. 18).

UNCW takes a nine-day break after its season-opening road swing before entertaining North Carolina Central (Nov. 28) in a mid-week contest that will serve as the first of four home dates for the Seahawks during non-league play.

A visit to New Orleans for a matchup with Conference USA foe Tulane (Dec. 2) kicks off the December portion of the schedule. A home contest against Queen City rival UNC Charlotte (Dec. 5) awaits the Seahawks upon their return from the Big Easy, while a three-game road swing that features games at Liberty (Dec. 8), Xavier (Dec. 18) and Northern Kentucky (Dec. 20) sends the Seahawks into their traditional Christmas break.

UNCW wraps up its non-conference play at home against former CAA rival Richmond (Dec. 30) before ringing in the New Year against North Carolina A&T (Jan. 2) in the final non-league contest of the regular season.

The 2012-13 Colonial Athletic Association schedule will be announced after televised dates have been determined.
