|Baseball Preview: USD Tournament|
SAN DIEGO, California – UNCW visits the Golden State for the first time in the program’s history this weekend when it continues a five-game road swing with the USD Tournament beginning Thursday with an 8 p.m. Eastern Time first-pitch against host San Diego.
The Seahawks will also take on California from the Pac12 and Baylor out of the Big 12. Rain will dictate when those games are played. For updated schedule and times throughout the weekend, visit UNCWsports.com or follow the Seahawks on Twitter (@uncwbaseball) and Facebook (uncwbaseball).
UNCW enters the weekend coming off a 3-2 setback at future Colonial Athletic Association rival Elon on Tuesday. Both teams battled though the eighth inning tied at two-all before a one-out, pinch hit single plated the eventual winning run for the Phoenix.
Senior LHP Mat Batts (0-1) will make his third start of the season for UNCW in the opener against San Diego. Batts fanned eight in his previous start against Liberty, but was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Through two starts covering 11 innings, Batts has walked just one while striking out 17.
USD will counter with preseason All-America LHP P.J. Conlon, who owns a 1-0 record and a 1.12 ERA through two starts in 2014.
The opener will be the second game between the coastal programs, with USD topping UNCW, 2-0 in 10 innings, last season in the Hughes Bros. Challenge.
First-pitch is slated for 8 p.m. EST and the game will be broadcast on AM630.net.
UNCW Probable Starters
Five Things To Know For This Weekend
1.) UNCW’s farthest trip west came in 2001, when it played at Arizona. The Seahawks have also traveled to Grand Junction, Colo., when it competed as a member of the NJCAA in the early 1960’s.
2.) The Seahawks will player Baylor for the first time in program history and the Bears will be the first of two Big 12 members to play UNCW, joining West Virginia, who visits Brooks Field later in the season.
3.) UNCW is slated to face three lefthanded starters over the weekend. The Seahawks have yet to face a lefthanded starter through eight games.
4.) With 1,297 games coached to his credit, UNCW Head Coach Mark Scalf is slated to coach his 1,300 game of his career on Sunday against Cal.
5.) UNCW has had three freshmen start in the outfield in each of its last four games. Robbie Thorburn, Casey Golden and Teddy Cillis have combined to hit .349 with four doubles, two triples, nine runs scored and 11 runs batted in.
