WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Former UNCW men’s basketball standout Keith Rendleman doesn’t yet know where he’ll continue his hoops career next season. He only knows for certain that it will be on the professional level.
The 6-8 Rendleman, who collected an array of postseason honors this past year with the Seahawks, signed recently with agent Sean Kennedy of Excel Sports Management and has been participating in several workouts over the last several weeks.
He just returned from his second trip to New York, where he worked out for 20 NBA teams, including the Brooklyn Nets, on Long Island. As part of his barnstorming tour, Rendleman heads to Atlanta this week to show the Hawks what he can do.
“I’ve been trying to get some exposure, work on my game and improve in some areas,” said the beefed-up 230-pound Rendleman, who appeared in 123 games for the Seahawks over the last four seasons. “They want to see me continue to make progress with my jump shot, get my handles down and be able to take the ball off the dribble.”
The Iron Station, N.C., hoopster went up against inside prospects Mike Muscala (Bucknell) and Anthony Bennett (UNLV) during the New York workouts and has also become close friends with highly-regarded guards Reggie Bullock (UNC Chapel Hill) and C.J. McCollum (Lehigh) as the group tries to position itself for the NBA’s upcoming draft on June 27.
“It’s been a great experience for me,” Rendleman said during a stopover in Wilmington. “I’m hoping to get noticed by some teams and they will talk about me to other teams. It’s all about preparation and possibly getting drafted.”
Excel represents a myriad of NBA players, including Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves), Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics), Blake Griffin (L.A. Clippers) and Tyler Hansbrough (Indiana Pacers) of the NBA. Excel also has Major League Baseball stars Derek Jeter (N.Y. Yankees), Lance Lynn (St. Louis Cardinals), Jason Heyward (Atlanta Braves) and Tyler Clippard (Washington Nationals) under contract. Golfers Matt Kuchar, Tiger Woods and Cheyenne Woods are clients as well.
