CONWAY, S.C. Senior first baseman Shane French collected four hits, including a tie-breaking homer leading off the ninth, as UNC Wilmington rallied for a 10-7 win over nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at Watson Stadium.

The Seahawks (18-4) upped their nation-leading win streak to 17 with the win, while the Chanticleers dropped to 19-5. The win was UNCW’s first at Watson Stadium since the 2001 season and halted a 4-game losing streak in Conway.

Freshman Cameron Roth (2-0) earned the win, allowing one hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Fellow freshman Stephen Harrold picked up his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

French finished 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs. Senior Jason Appel and sophomore Mike Rooney each had three hits as UNCW banged out a season-high 20 hits against the top pitching staff in the Big South Conference.

Sophomore Nick McCully was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Senior Tommy Baldridge drove in two runs and was one of five Chants with two hits.

UNCW plated a run in the top of the first when senior Mark Carver knocked in the first run of the game with a single through the rightside, scoring senior Daniel Hargrave, who drew a 1-out walk and moved to second on Appel’s bunt single.

The Seahawks again loaded the bases in the second and sophomore Rhett Miller lifted a sacrifice fly to left center to give UNCW a 2-0 lead.

Coastal bounced back in the bottom of the second to narrow its deficit to 2-1 on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Drew Martin.

The Chanticleers grabbed the lead, 3-2, with two runs in the third. Baldridge knocked in the tying run with a single to right and Tyler Bortnick knocked in the go-ahead run with a safety squeeze bunt to score Doc Doyle, who singled earlier in the inning.

French put the Seahawks back in front, 4-3, with a 2-out, 2-run double to left center in the fifth off CCU starter David Anderson, who left the game following the hit.

Coastal drew even in the fifth when Baldridge plated his second run of the game with a sac fly to right off Seahawk reliever Allen Flood.

The Chants broke the deadlock in the sixth with three runs after stringing together four consecutive hits off Flood to knock him out of the game. David Sappelt scored on a passed ball to break the tie and Doyle and Anderson followed with RBI singles to increase CCU’s lead to 7-4.

UNCW rallied in the eighth to tie the game with three runs at 7-all. Hargrave and Appel drove in runs with consecutive singles and Hargrave tied the game, scoring on a wild pitch by McCully.

The Seahawks added three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 10-7 lead. Rooney and Hargrave added run scoring singles later in the inning to complete the scoring.

Coastal tried to rally in the ninth, but Harrold induced pinch hitter Jose Iglesias to hit into a game-ending double play.

The Seahawks visit Virginia Commonwealth in their next outing when they return to Colonial Athletic Association action on Mar. 28 at 7 p.m.
