Streak Moves To 12 Straight As Seahawks Sweep Pride

WILMINGTON, N.C. Freshman relievers Cameron Roth and Stephen Harrold recorded saves as UNC Wilmington swept Hofstra, 6-3 and 5-4, in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at University Field.

The Seahawks, who swept their third doubleheader of the season, extended their winning streak to 12 straight and improved their record to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in the circuit. Hofstra, losers of their last eight, slipped to 4-11 and 0-6.

In the nightcap, senior Jeff Hatcher (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits over seven innings. Hofstra touched up Hatcher for a run on two hits in the bottom of the first, but the right hander retired 18 straight batters before allowing a single in the seventh with two out.

HU senior Nick Panzarella (1-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in four innings.

Trailing 1-0 after one, Carver tied the game with his fifth home run of the season and second of the day in the top of the fourth. UNCW gained the lead later in the inning when Senior Jes Snyder doubled home senior Justin Barefoot, who drew a 2-out walk, from first base.

Hofstra plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it 5-4 before Harrold was able to shut the door for his first career save.

Snyder led the Seahawks in game two, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run.

Seniors Jason Appel and Mark Carver and sophomore Mike Rooney each chipped in two hits as the Seahawks out hit the Pride, 9-5.

In the opener, UNCW broke a 2-all deadlock in the fifth inning with four 2-out runs for a 6-2 lead. Carver and senior Shane French each homered in the inning. On the game, French drove in three runs on a homer and a double.

UNCW junior Brad Holt improved to 3-1, going five innings and limiting the Pride to three runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks.

Roth allowed one hit and a walk in two scoreless innings in relief of Holt.

HU junior Rob Kumbativic (0-3) allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out eight in going the distance.

The Seahawks host nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at 7 p.m.


Notes: UNCW had 11 home runs on the weekend ... The Seahawks improved to 19-3 all-time against the Pride ... UNCW has drawn 89 walks and struck out 89 times this season as a team ... For the weekend, French hit .500 (5-10) with a double and three home runs (1.500 slugging average) ... UNCW out hit the Pride, .308-.195 on the weekend ... 12 straight wins is one short of the school record of 13 set in 1995.
