WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore outfielder Joe Bertone and senior pitcher Mat Batts were named Colonial Athletic Association Player and Pitcher-of-the-Week, respectively, after UNCW won two-of-three from the College of Charleston last weekend.

Bertone ignited the UNCW lineup during the pitching dominated series, hitting .750 (6-for-8) with two doubles and a pair of home runs. In the series opener, a 5-0 win, he homered twice for the first time in his career with a two-run shot in the first and later added solo homer. Bertone reached base safely in eight of his 10 plate appearances (.800 OBA) and slugged an astounding 1.750 for the series. He added a pair of doubles in Sunday’s loss to the Cougars.

For Batts, this is the fourth time he’s been named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week. The senior lefthander earned his fifth consecutive win last Friday in a 5-0 win over then conference-leading College of Charleston. Batts scattered six hits and a pair of walks over seven shutout innings. The conference leader in strikeouts added to his total with nine strikeouts on the evening. Batts leads the circuit with 92 strikeouts and is second on the NCAA active career leader list with 323 and has recorded eight games of eight or more strikeouts this season.

The series win kept the Seahawks in a tie with Delaware for third in the CAA standings, though the Blue Hens hold the tie-breaker between the two.

The Seahawks return to action later this week with a three-game, non-conference series against The Citadel. The series opens on May 8 at 7 p.m. in Charleston and the two will then play at 5 p.m. on Friday, also in Charleston. The series concludes on May 11 with a 2 p.m. start at Brooks Field.
