WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW’s Ricky Holden and William Shepley combined for 7 and 1/3 shutout innings of relief as UNCW topped visiting UNC Greensboro, 5-2, on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 7-8 with the non-conference win which also halted a brief two-game losing skid. The Spartans, meanwhile, dipped to 7-9 with the setback.

Holden (2-0) earned the win and Shepley notched the save, combining to allow just four hits and two walks while striking out eight. For Holden, he finished with a career-high six strikeouts.

UNCG starter Andrew George (0-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks over five innings.

Both teams combined for 12 hits, only one going for extra bases. UNCW freshman Teddy Cillis had a pinch-hit RBI double in the eighth to give UNCW a 4-2 lead.

How it happened: UNCG scored twice in the top of the first, but UNCW answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and took the lead in the second with two runs. In that second inning, Josh Abshire and Casey Golden both beat out potential inning-ending double play ground ball to score runs.

Inside the box score: UNCW went 1-for-9 in RBI opportunities, but its pitcher held UNCG to no hits in six at bats in RBI chances … Seahawk pitcher held UNCG to 0-for-12 with runners on base and 1-for-9 with two out … UNCW scored all three runners it had on third with less than two out … UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base in 4-of-8 innings and scored twice … Holden and Shepley did not allow a Spartan further than second base.

Notes: Corey Dick extended his hitting streak to a career-long tying 11 games … Terence Connelly also pushed his hitting streak to seven games … Both Dick and Connelly also have reached base safely in each of their last 11 consecutive games … Holden improved to 10-2 in his career while Shepley collected his second save … Connelly played second for the first time in his collegiate career after 74 career starts at shortstop … Luis Renvill started at shortstop for UNCW … UNCW raised its record to 9-11 all-time against UNCG … The Seahawks turned a season-high three double plays.

Up next: The Seahawks host a red-hot Indiana State, who has won its last 12 games following a season-opening loss at Auburn. The series opens Friday with a 4 p.m. start.
